The early Church wrestled with this question very hard because it was difficult being an early Christian faced with the might of the pagan empire, with the expectations of the Greek philosophical world, and not the least with many people from the Jewish background who were puzzled by what this new movement was all about. And again and again Paul, as the one who is establishing these little communities of Jesus followers in the largely gentile world that he went to, Paul has to articulate and then to model himself what it means to translate faith into the work which has to be done. . . .
God has made you as a human being, has given you gifts and callings to get on with that work and earn your own daily bread, and then you’ll have something to give to those who need, and those who really do need it will be supported. So Paul in each of these ways is challenging his readers to think about how faith translates not just into any old work as, “Oh, I’ve got to do something, somehow,” but rather into actual callings from God, which are to be engaged with cheerfulness, remembering and reflecting as he says at the end of 1 Corinthians 15, that what you do in the Lord is not in vain.1
